The ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) is committed to doing our part to redress equity issues for academics in Australia.
In 2019 in Australia, women constituted 53% of level A, 55% of level B, 47% of level C, and 34% of level D and E academics.
In the engineering, computer science and technology disciplines, gender disparity is greater. The higher the academic level, the greater the disparity. Only around 10% of engineering Professors, and 18% of computing Professors are women.
There are other significant equity issues in Australian universities (although data is harder to come by). For example, Asian-born academics make up 15.4% of teaching and research staff, but only 3.4% of Deputy Vice-Chancellors are Asian-born.
As part of the 2021 Academic Promotions round, we are proud to introduce the first information session for 2021 Academic Promotions: Equity in Academia.
This session will feature a panel of our College academics, who will speak to their experiences of the promotions process, including any equity issues they perceive or have experienced.
The session is open to any CECS staff member interested in applying for promotion in 2021, or who wants to hear about the structural, institutional challenges that people from underrepresented communities may face in their academic career.
