In Conversation with Miranda Forsyth
In PNG and Bougainville sorcery and witchcraft are used as lenses to make sense of traumatic and difficult events in the world, particularly in death and illness. When people believe in sorcery and witchcraft it carries with it the assumption that others will practice and use its power to do harm. When death and misfortune arrives in communities, these assumptions are channelled through accusations, which are often followed through with gruesome results.

This in-conversation with Dr Miranda Forsyth explores the nature of sorcery accusation and related violence, exploring the scope of the violence, how police and bureaucrats are responding to it and what strategies could be used to effectively address the violence.
