ANU Japan Institute Seminar Series - Celebrating Professor Carol Hayes

In this ANU Japan Institute Seminar, we celebrate the lifetime achievements of Carol Hayes, Professor of Japanese Language and Studies in the College of Asia and the Pacific, Distinguished Educator at the Australian National University and Principal Fellow of the Advance HE Educational Fellowship Scheme.

Carol has had an extraordinary impact on the course of Japanese language teaching in Australia: she is recognized for her creative education design, charismatic teaching and innovative use of technology. She is also a distinguished scholar of Japanese poetry and a practising poet and artist with an extraordinary network of alumni, community and academic colleagues.

In this roundtable, Carol’s ANU, national and international peers reflect on the impact of her work and academic leadership.

Brief Biography:
Carol's expertise lies in Japanese Language and Cultural & Literary Studies, with a focus on cultural production (including literature, film, popular culture and craft) and language teaching methodologies and practice. Her research interests include modern Japanese poetry, the portrayal of social/cultural issues in literature and film, how Japan has been represented in Australia and the impact of Japanese creative arts on crafting practice around the world.

Carol’s research also includes Japanese language teaching methodologies and practice, particularly e-Teaching and e-Learning with a focus on flexible, online learning, student motivation and Japanese language acquisition, and professional development for academic staff in the Learning and Teaching space.
